The Rx Consultant

Rx Pharmacology CE Virtual Meeting

The past couple of years have witnessed important and often controversial legal/regulatory developments with direct impact on pharmacy practice.  This presentation will address those developments that fall under 2 general categories: (1) federal and state efforts to improve drug information communication with patients; and (2) Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) efforts to further regulate controlled substances in order to prevent diversion and abuse.

With the overall goal of reducing medication-related adverse events, the FDA and some states have focused on the quality of drug information provided by pharmacies to patients.  Particular attention has been directed to 2 areas:  The label affixed to the dispensed medication container, and the written patient information provided with the dispensed medication, called “consumer medication information” (CMI).  Regarding the label, California has led the way with a regulation requiring standardized, patient-oriented labels on all dispensed prescription drugs.
